Paul Merson believes that N’Golo Kante is one of the Premier League’s top midfielders – but not the best player in the division.
The French midfielder has earned plenty of praise for his performances in recent seasons since breaking into the first team at Leicester and helping the Foxes to win the title last term.
Kante helped Leicester City to win the Premier League title in the 2015-16 campaign and then played a key role in Chelsea’s title triumph last term after his move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2016.
The midfielder was voted as the PFA player of the year last season as he helped Chelsea win the title under Antonio Conte.
However, although Merson believes that Kante is the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League, the former Arsenal man feels that Cesc Fabregas is the better playmaker.
Asked if Kante is the Premier League’s best player, Merson told Sky Sports: “No, I think he’s the best at what he does but I don’t think he’s like a David Silva in terms of quality.
“For what he does yes but I wouldn’t say he’s the best player in the league.
“Silva and Kevin De Bruyne are the two I look at in terms of highest quality. Kante is absolutely box to box and if he could add some more goals he’d be priceless but they are better footballers.
“For a manager, he’s great at what he does and if he went somewhere else they’d probably win the league, but Cesc Fabregas is a better player in terms of putting a ball on a sixpence.”
Kante will be hoping to start for Chelsea when the Blues take on Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.
The west London side have won their last three games on the spin to move up to ninth place in the table.
