Mesut Ozil has lost Arsene Wenger’s trust at Arsenal, says Gunners legend Martin Keown
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger appears to have lost his faith in star player Mesut Ozil this season, according to Gunners legend Martin Keown. The Germany international missed the recent game at Chelsea through injury, with many pundits agreeing that Arsenal looked stronger defensively without him in the side as they held on to gain a 0-0 draw.
Ozil then only made the bench for the following game against West Brom, coming on for just the final seven minutes of a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium. Always a regular starter since his big-money move from Real Madrid in 2013, Ozil won’t be used to this treatment, and Keown believes it could be significant.
The former Arsenal defender accused the 28-year-old of ‘going missing’ for long stages last season and says Wenger has lost his trust and patience with him. ‘Ozil … is the one I wouldn’t trust as much mentally, and I believe he’s not playing tonight because the gaffer really can’t trust him anymore,’ Keown told BBC 5 Live. ‘I think it’s a huge story that Ozil doesn’t play tonight.
